Fearless Through Challenges, Ready to Fly
Natalie Szeto, 2025 Graduate of Cadet Pilot Programme, shares how the programme guided her toward her dream of becoming a pilot.
“My future should be shaped by myself. With passion and belief, anyone — regardless of gender — can become a pilot.” For Natalie, a graduate of the second class of HKIAA’s Cadet Pilot Programme, gender has never been a barrier. What truly determines how far one can fly is character, capability, and perseverance.
Where Challenges Shape Determination
Petite in stature, Natalie once worried whether she could physically operate an aircraft in the cockpit. Before enrolling, the HKIAA arranged a session in the flight simulator to test her reach and comfort. The experience not only eased her concerns but also reaffirmed her determination to pursue flying.
During the approximately six-month Theoretical Knowledge Instruction (TKI) course in Hong Kong, she had to master 15 modules, including principles of flight, meteorology, and navigation, all within a tight schedule. “The programme was extremely intensive. We couldn’t afford to relax for even a moment,” she recalled. She spent her spare time watching training videos, reviewing lessons in advance, and discussing concepts with classmates to build a solid foundation.
Her discipline and diligence became her greatest strengths. She gave her all in every subject and ultimately completed the TKI course at the top of her class, before heading to Redding, California, for approximately eight months of Flying Training, where the real test began.
Real Flying, Pushing Beyond Her Limits
Transitioning from a simulator to a real aircraft was eye opening. “Real flying requires a much stronger sense of environmental awareness,” Natalie said. However, she struggled with motion sickness. In the early stages of training, she often felt unwell and even vomited repeatedly during flights. Despite the discomfort, she refused to give up.
She increased her training, adjusted her pace, and relied on sheer willpower to push through each hurdle. Gradually, her body adapted, and she revived the joy of flying. “The first time I took off from the runway on my own was unforgettable — and incredibly emotional.” In that moment, she felt closer than ever to her achieving her dream.
After completing her flying training in the United States, Natalie returned to Hong Kong for a two-week Multi Crew Cooperation (MCC) Course and later obtained a Commercial Pilot’s Licence (Aeroplane) from Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department. She has since joined HK Express as a Second Officer.
“What attracts me most about being a pilot is the sense of responsibility. Flying isn’t just about operating an aircraft; it’s also a mission built on discipline and the duty to protect passengers’ safety.” She firmly believes that following procedures and maintaining discipline are essential qualities every pilot must uphold.
Through her own journey, Natalie hopes to encourage others not to be limited by gender, body size, or stereotypes. With belief, perseverance, and passion — and by giving your all — everyone can find their own route in the sky.
