Finding My Direction, One Step at a Time
Jacky Lau, Graduate, 2022 Diploma in Aviation Operations, shared how the programme helped him understand the work in aviation and his career path.
After completing his DSE, Jacky Lau (Jacky) felt uncertain about his future. Although he tried other programmes, none aligned with his true interests. Passionate about aviation, he had always dreamed of working at the airport, a place filled with global travellers and stories. When he discovered the Diploma in Aviation Operations (DAO) programme, he seized the opportunity and took his first step toward an aviation career.
Jacky had been fascinated by airports since childhood, often observing passengers, aircraft, and the airport operations. After joining the programme, his understanding of the aviation industry deepened significantly. Among the seven placement categories offered by the programme, he chose Air Cargo for his 12-month placement.
He recalled, “I never imagined choosing air cargo at first, but after classroom learning in the first month, I realised how interesting and important this sector is — it’s a major part of Hong Kong International Airport’s operations.”
Jacky particularly appreciated the programme’s industry visits. “Every module included a site visit, allowing us to see real operations up close. For example, when studying air cargo, we visited the cargo apron and cargo terminals, which gave me a clearer, complete understanding of the industry.” The programme’s partner companies also introduced job roles, requirements, and career pathways, helping students make informed decisions. “These site visits and career talks helped me understand each placement’s roles and prospects. Without them, I might not have chosen air cargo, and I might not have found the direction that suits me best.”
Jacky successfully secured an internship as a Operation Intern at DHL Central Asia Hub. After graduation, he was offered a full-time position as a Security Officer to continue developing his career. His responsibilities included ensuring cargo shipments complied with ICAO and local security regulations through X-ray screening, physical inspections, and other procedures — all to ensure cargo is safe before loading into aircraft. He believes the programme’s Aviation Safety and Security module gave him essential foundational knowledge, helping him adapt to the job more quickly.
In his daily work, Jacky encountered a wide range of cargo — from frozen food, to medical supplies, luxury sports cars and even racehorses for international competitions. “You see different types of cargo every day. It’s always fresh and exciting, and that’s what I enjoy most,” he shared.
The programme’s 12-month paid placement allowed Jacky to “earn while learning,” which he considers one of its biggest advantages. “You gain real work experience and have a stable income at the same time. It allowed me to focus on learning without financial pressure. It’s incredibly efficient.”
The programme also assigns each student a seasoned supervisor to guide their career planning. Jacky regularly shared his work experiences with his supervisor, who offered tailored advice based on his strengths and interests, helping him better understand his long-term direction. With this support, Jacky decided to continue his studies. He successfully completed the Professional Diploma in Aviation Operations programme at HKIAA in 2025 and is now pursuing a Bachelor of Science (Honours) Aviation Management, further strengthening his foundation for a long-term career in the aviation industry.
