“Seeing an aircraft engine up close for the first time was unforgettable. The complexity of the components made me curious about how such a powerful engine is built. That was the moment I knew I had found my direction.”

David Ip, Graduate, 2023, Diploma in Aviation Operations, shared how he knew he had found the right direction in aviation.

Before joining the Diploma in Aviation Operations (DAO), David felt unsure about his future after secondary school. Even though the aviation industry was facing challenges during the pandemic, he believed air transport would always remain essential. “No matter how advanced information technology becomes, passenger and cargo transportation ultimately rely on the aviation industry,” he said.

His childhood fascination with aircraft eventually led him to the DAO programme. “I’ve always thought planes were cool, and I enjoyed flying when I was young,” he shared. With a more introverted personality, he felt engineering suited him better than customer-facing roles. He chose aircraft engine maintenance at Hong Kong Aero Engine Services Limited (HAESL) as his preferred placement — a decision that shaped his career path.

Through the DAO programme, David gained both foundational aviation knowledge and meaningful exposure to real-world operations. The site visit to HAESL was a turning point. “Seeing an aircraft engine up close for the first time was unforgettable. The complexity of the components made me curious about how such a powerful engine is built. That was the moment I knew I had found my direction.”

During his 12 month paid placement, David learnt to balance work and studies while developing essential soft skills. Time management, presentation training, interview preparation and CV writing workshops helped him communicate more confidently and organise his thoughts more effectively.

Today, David works as a Level 3 Maintenance Technician at HAESL, responsible for engine component inspection. The knowledge, exposure and mentorship he received through the DAO programme strengthened his passion for aircraft engineering and helped him define his long term goals.

Looking ahead, he plans to pursue further qualifications and work toward becoming a licensed engineer capable of certifying aircraft parts and components.
