Bridging Construction and Aviation Operations: A Cross-Industry Perspective

Zang Yue, Graduate, 2023 Advanced Master in Air Transport Management, Shares how his experience was broadened

Strong cross-disciplinary expertise, outstanding leadership, confident social communications, and sharp decision-making —these are the hallmarks of a high-performing team leader. Caesar, a graduate of the Advanced Master in Air Transport Management (AMATM) jointly offered by HKIAA and ENAC, embodies this blend of capabilities.

Currently serving as Deputy General Manager of the International Department at Beijing Urban Construction, Caesar has played a key role in several major international airport projects, including Beijing Daxing International Airport, the runway development in the Maldives, and Hong Kong International Airport’s Three-Runway System. With a solid foundation in construction engineering, he sought to deepen his understanding of airport operations and management through the AMATM programme. “We need to learn how to develop airports—not just construct them,” Caesar emphasised.

The programme's “one long weekend every month” mode allowed Anchalee to balance work commitments while absorbing future leader essentials. Students from across the region gathered from Friday to Sunday every month. Friday and Saturday classes usually consist of theoretical and practical exercises, while “Presentation Sundays” showcased their learning outcomes and achievements.

Having already accumulated extensive experience in construction, Caesar expected the modules on airport operations and business management would broaden his professional scope. He found particular value in topics such as the Franchise Operation Model, Bowtie Analysis Model, and Communication & Crisis Management, which offered insights applicable not only to aviation but also to his day-to-day work.

Beyond academic knowledge, the programme helped Caesar cultivate a robust professional network. “My classmates came from Hong Kong, Mainland China, and the Belt & Road aviation sectors—including airline managers and pilots. Although English isn’t my first language, everyone actively participated in discussions and shared their expertise. These exchanges helped me gain a multidimensional understanding of the aviation industry and strengthened my interpersonal skills.”

Balancing a demanding schedule that involves frequent travel across Hong Kong, Macau, and Southeast Asia, along with family responsibilities, Caesar appreciated the programme’s flexible structure. ““Online modules let me preview content in advance. The emphasis on group presentations and professional theses made the learning far more practical than traditional lectures.

Looking ahead, Caesar plans to apply his newfound knowledge to airport operations. “Now, when I engage with clients, I can offer more informed advice—like understanding the need for larger terminal interiors to support commercial development. As a marketing representative for an international construction firm, enhancing my aviation expertise enables me to tailor design solutions to meet client needs more effectively.”
